Tom Gibbs is one of the freshest voices on the Scottish jazz scene. He started playing his Grandmother’s piano - a lovely old Pleyel - aged seven, and has been tinkering ever since. Although he probably enjoyed the clarinet more at school, he got drawn to jazz piano after a trip to New York and an all-nighter at Small’s jazz club. (The promise of ‘10 hours jazz for 10 dollars’ had caught this bargain-hunter’s eye). Wanting a rounded musical education, he did a music degree at York University, gaining a BA with 1st class honours and an MA with distinction. He studied for his Masters with piano hero John Taylor, who dubbed him 'inspiring', and in his final recital Julian Arguelles guested in his quintet. Since graduating in 2006 Tom has been based in Glasgow, performing with top names in Scottish Jazz and further afield including: Paul Towndrow, Konrad Wizniewski, Ari Hoenig, Colin Steele, Graeme Stephen, Phil Bancroft, Martin Kershaw, Nigel Hitchcock, Mark Nightingale, Mark McKnight, John Randall. He has performed throughout the UK and jazz festival appearances include Brecon, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London, Skye. He has appeared on Radio 3 with Paul Towndrow’s sextet and on Radio Scotland many times with different outfits. His own band has recently been recorded by BBC Radio 3 for broadcast on Jazz Line Up later in the year. The band members know each other well through many years of sharing flats, CDs and pints of milk, and they jump at the chance to play Tom's overly complex and hard-to-read charts. He was privileged to be asked to play solo in support of Lee Konitz at the 2008 Glasgow Jazz Festival. This set was later broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland. He holds the piano chair in Stu Brown's Raymond Scott Project, recently featured at the Best of British Jazz showcase at the European Jazz Network event in Glasgow. The band has just released an album to much acclaim and Tom’s solo piano rendition of ‘Egyptian Barn Dance’ has been played on JazzFM and WFMU in New Jersey. Since October 2007 he has performed every Sunday night at The 78 in Glasgow, which has been described as the best regular jazz night in Scotland. He has recorded with Stu Brown's Raymond Scott Project (Scottish Arts Council funded), Euan Burton (featuring Ari Hoenig), Hue and Cry and DT6. He has also studied at the School for Improvised Music in New York and Oslo, and taught at Napier Summer Jazz School since 2007.
